Atmospheric oxidation processes for possible chloro fluoro carbon replacement compounds

Objective

The major objective of the original project (EV5V-CT9I-0024) involved investigations of the kinetics and mechanisms for the oxidation of chlorine and bromine containing compounds under atmospheric conditions. Much of the work has been concerned with the oxidation of compounds containing two carbon atoms. This proposed extension to the programme involves the study of CH2FX type hydrohalocarbons (X is H, F, Cl or Br). This series of compounds includes a number of species which have been suggested as replacements for the ozone depleting chlorofluorocarbons. It is also intended to study the formation and degradation of CF2O. This compound is formed both in the oxidation of CHF2X and also from C2 hydrohalocarbons. Mechanisms for the subsequent removal of this species from the atmosphere are unclear at the present time. A significant contribution of this proposal concerns theoretical estimations of rate parameters for the various steps in the oxidative degradation of hydrohalocarbons. Such calculations will provide a valuable tool for analysing the environmental impact of atmospheric releases of a variety of hydrohalocarbons.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
