Objectif This project will extend that currently being undertaken by school students under the Joule II contract. The school will act as co-ordinator with contributions coming from Prague and Sofia. Being a direct band semi conductor with a room temperature energy gap of 1.5 eV, CdTe is a promising photovoltaic material particularly suited to thin film devices. We have developed solution growth suited to thin film dev1ces. We have developed solution growth techniques for the formation of CdTe on t1n oxide coated glass. Films are sphalerite, p type and have resistivit1es around 2 x 10 Ocms. Cadmium sulphide thin films have been prepared by this school for many years. They are prepared by a wet dip process and are typically 20 m thick with resistivity of 2 Ocms. We are thus in a position to fabricate a CdS-CdTe heterojunction and evaluate its photovoltaic properties. The Prague group have similar interests and the project aims would more easlily be met by working together and exchanging samples. Prague would have access via Twyford to the expertise of the Eurocad consortium and Twyford would gain with access to Charles University's equipment for characterising thin film semi conductors and photovoltaic cells. The Sofia group will bring to this work a great deal of understanding on the chemistry of the CdS thin film formation and the effect of fabrication parameters on the electrical and optical properties of the films. The original project also has educational aims and these, too, will be extended by this original proposal, as our partners in Prague and Sofia will include other secondary schools in their areas. Twyford has a considerable expertise in this field. This proposal is made with the full support and knowledge of the Eurocad consortium. Dr D Bonnet (Batelle Institute) and Dr E Oszan (B P Solar) have indicated their support for the project. They wish to be fully involved with us as the project proceeds.
