Objective
The existing project (JOU2-CT92-0208) concentrates on decentralized electricity production from biomass. This project complements the work being carried out and extends it's scope to the Eastern and Central European countries. The proposed project has the following objectives: 1. To determine the production potential and economics for the growing of energy crops in representative areas of Eastern and Central Europe. The study will focus on: C4 grasses (eg Miscanthus), coppiced wood and biomass residues from agriculture and forestry. The particular countries to be studied are Romania, Slovak Republic and Slovenia.
2. To carry out a technical and economic evaluation of available equipment for the generation of electricity, with and without use of waste heat where appropriate, from energy crops through thermal processing of solid biomass fuels. Information will be obtained on commercially available and potential biomass energy conversion technologies of the order of: O to 2OMW. These will be assessed in terms of factors such as investment and running costs, efficiency, etc.
3. To review the routes of power generation using biomass feedstocks and to identify the most suitable systems for field testing based on economic, technical and environmental criteria. The most promising component technologies will be examined in detail. A complete integrated system design and financlal analysis will be carried out. The latter will include examining the effects of taxation on fuels and agricultural policy on viability of the systems. An environmental impact assessment will: examine improvements to overall CO2 emissions, consider Nox, SO2. Particulate emissions and assess benefits due to a reduction in fossil fuel consumption and improvements in land usage. A consistent methodoloy to assess complete schemes for electricity generation from biomass will be developed, based where appropriate on previous studies.
The project will be coordinated by the Natural Resources Institute (NRI) in the UK with assistance from professor J Walker, Southampton University. Other proposers are Forest Research Institute, Slovak Republic; Institute Jozef Stephan, Slovenia and ICEMENBERG, Romania. ' ' -
