Objetivo

In an ongoing contract, a study has been undertaken the main interest of which is focused cn the progress achieved by Denmark and Austria in the field of biomass exploitation for energy purposes.
The proposed study aims to extend the methodology and approach in other countries of Central and Eastern (CE) Europe.
These countries face acute heat and power supply problems which are likely to be dramatically increased due to the competition from western countries and the future deregulation of power market.
Renewables,such as biomass, could positively contribute in improving energy supply not only by providing heat and power but alsoby contributing to alternative land uses.
Moreover,the applicatic of "green" technology will lead to a drastic pollution abutement which is worsened in these countries due to the extensive and inefficiency use of fossil fuel.
The experience gained from biomass-to-energy valorisation in Denmark and especially Austria- a country with similar characteristics with other Danubean countries - will be further exploited in C E countries which have been found to have (see FAO-"Biomass Combustion Technology", CNRE Guideline Nol, 1988) significant biomass energy sources.
The first step of this study will be gathering and quantifying data for the potential of biomass (agricultural and forestal) in the participating CE countries.
Short rotation forestry will also be examined as an alternative to traditional farming.
The second step will include close examination of the existing biomass conversion technology and the possibility for adapting technology already used in Denmark and Austria.
Under the third step, the existing policy and the necessary measures tc be taken will be considered, while externalities like economics, environmental issuses and Social impacts with respect to employment in both agriculture and manufucture will be dusely examined.
The forth step will identify succesful case studies (if any) as a helpful tool to decision making.
Finally the possibilities for adaption of the appropriate measures and conversion technologies based on Danish and Austrian experience will be identified and justified suggestions and recommendations will be given by the coordinator in order to achieve a succesful penetration of biomass, both for each one and for all participating countries as geographical entity.
