Design and analysis of supercritical extraction processes

Objetivo

DESIGN AND ANALYSIS 0F SUPERCRITICAL EXTRACTION PROCESS
Supercritical extraction processes provide analternativeto difficult and high energycost separation processes. This has given rise to widespread interest in processing with supercritical fluids. The objective of the proposed project is to develop systematic and highly integrated design and analysis algorithms for supercritical (or near supercritical extraction processes and, verify these algorithms with experimentally measured data. In particular, these algo rithms should be able to establish the selectioncriteria for asupercritical fluid (as a solvent) for a specified process, generate an optimal process flowsheet complete with conditions of operation which have been analysed with respect to operability and sensitivity to changes in the operating conditions. These algorithms will therefore, consider steady state design issues, transsient behaviour of the process as well as operating and equipment costs. The computational tools needed for the development of these algorithms are, steady state and dynamic simulation models coupled with the appropriate thermodynamic models and numerical methods including optimization techniques.
The experimental facilities needed for themeasurement of phase equilibrium, transport Property, and pilot plant data are available at the Universities of L'Aquila and Cadiz and University of oporto and Consorzio di Ricerche Applicata alla Biotechnologica Avezzano (partners in this project and the earlier project).
