Development and implementation of an advanced control system for the optimal operation and management of medium size power systems with a large penetration from renewable power sources

Objective

The integration on a large scale of renewable energy sources for electricity production in medium size power systems (i.e.
in islands and rural areas) requires an optimal management of the power pool that can provide maximum fuel and capacity credits while maintaining a high level of security to the grid.
In this frame an advanced control system is being developed under the JOULE II research project JOU-CT92-0053. The objective of the above project is to develop and implement a control system that will perform the management of the power units (diesels, renewables) and also the management of the various loads connected to the power grid.
This control system will enable the maximization of benefits from renewable energy sources (in terms of fuel and capacity credits), while maintaining a high level of security fo the grid.
The objective of the additional research project is to contribute to the research concerning the application of artificial intelligence, fuzzy logic and neural networks techniques in the real-time control of power systems including Renewable Energies.
These methods have the advantage of approximating the power system operator way of thinking, they can face ill conditioned power system situations and even cases with bad or missing data acquisition.
Under this frame, the performance of various expert system techniques in the real-time control of power systems will be tested.
Especially, the performance of fuzzy logic techniques in the implemenation of the rules will be examined.
Neural network and fuzzy logic models will be developped for the forecasting of the power system load and the renewable ressources (wind, solar radiation) and their results will be compared to the results obtained by conventional methods.
Furthermore, the developed models will be in a modular form in order to be easily integrated as special functions in the advanced control system. The associated proposer in this project is IPA SA (Romania) which is an Institute for Research Design and Manufacture of Automation Equipment. Close collaboration will be developed with this Institute and the partners of the main project.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
