Phenomenology of the standard model and alternatives for present and future high energy colliders

Objective



The Standard Model of strong and electroweak interactions has been impressively confirmed by the existing particle accelerators, at the level of radiactive corrections. However, two of its essential ingredients, the top quark and the Higgs boson, have not yet been discovered and, more generally, the mechanism responsible for gauge symmetry breaking has not been experimentally tested. Essential clues for the solution of these problems are expected to come from the future high energy colliders. In order to get the highest benefits from the experimental program in Europe, further development of the phenomenology of the standard model and alternatives is needed. Our network combines Groups with the necessary different expertise. On the one hand experience in model building, as well as the techniques of perturbative field theory, is needed to obtain accurate predictions from the models. On the other hand advanced Monte Carlo techniques are also required to make realistic predictions from these models for future experiments. The additional Groups will improve this potential. New objetives are to develop a Monte Carlo event generator for e+e- -> W+W-, W -> qq,1beta which will provide Standard Model predictions with a precision of 1% or better; to improve the tt production predictions at e+e- colliders near threshold; to extend the existing perturbative theoretical framework to obtain a deeper understanding of the behaviour of the proton in terms of its partonic constituents; to continue a systematic analysis of the supersymmetric corrections to electroweak processes; and to produce semi-analytical formulae for the Standard Model radiactive corrections to the deep-inelastic cross section for ep scattering
