Objective

The gauge quantum field theory of the electroweak and strong interactions, based on the gauge group SU(3)xSU(2)xU(1), leaves a number of fundamental problems not understood and it is expected that it is an effective theory to the more fundamental, yet unknown, theoretical structure. Among the problems to be understood the origin and the mechanism of the spontaneous electroweak symmetry breaking, the origin and pattern of the fermion mass spectrum and the origin of the CP nonconservation can be mentioned as the most pressing ones.
It is very likely that most of the problems listed above will be understood simultaneously in the proper extension of the standard theory. All suggested extensions predict the existence of new physical particles and processes. For several years the Warsaw group has been actively engaged in research along the above general lines.
The proposal contains investigations of the following topics: 1) Electroweak symmetry breaking in multi-Higgs doublet models and particularly in supersymmetric models
2) Rare processes in "beyond the standard" models
3) Fermion mass generation
4) Superunification in strings
5) Phase transitions in particle models and cosmology.
The topics listed above belong to the frontiers of particle physics, intensively investigated by many groups worldwide. The Warsaw group has close contacts with the groups in Munich, CERN, Paris region, Trieste, Oxford and Valencia. They are mainly based on long term visits of members of the group in Western laboratories and some visits of Western scientists in Warsaw (in particular the annual conference in Kazimierz is well recognized and numerously attended). In general, however, the group needs additional funds for intense, continuous collaboration based on frequent (but shortterm) mutual visits and on easy communication based on well developed computer network.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
