Objectif
This proposal is for participation of the Torun Radio Astronomical Observatory (TRAO) in Poland and the FOEMI Satellite Geodetic Observatory at Penc in Hungary in the Human Capital and Mobility Programme in which the European VLBI Network (EVN) of Radio Telescopes has been selected as a Large Scale Facility (contract number ERBCHGECT92OOII). The objectives are i) provide opportunities for access to the EVN by new users from the astrophysics and geodesy/geophysics communities in Central and Eastern Europe, ii) to provide training for young Central and Eastern European researchers in VLBI techniques, and iii) to increase the scientific capability of the EVN with a modern VLBI telescope in Torun. For the last 15 Years, the Torun group has contributed occasionally to VLBI projects. The group, 25 persons, is currently constructing a high sensitivity 32m diameter telescope dedicated to VLBI, to be completed in 1993. We ask for funds to construct new receivers for the 32m radio telescope at 18/21 and 3.6cm wavelength to match VLBI standards, and to purchase magnetic tapes for use in EVN and global observations. With this hardware support, the telescope will be up to date in sensitivity, and its good geographic location to the east will ensure its inclusion in all observing programmes proposed by EC scientists. It is also proposed to appoint two scientists to provide scientific support as well as a technician to support the increased load of EVN observing. With this personnel support, polish astronomers and geodesists will have full access to Western expertise in data analysis and in observing techniques. The budget required is 380 KECU for a4-year programme from 1993 to 1997. Scientists at the FOEMI Geodetic Observatory are involved in an international effort to provide software for potential users of space VLBI systems particularly those from European countries. However the 15-strong group has limited experience in the taking of VLBI data and its subsequent analysis. This proposal will support the training of two penc staff members at the Joint Institute for VLBI in Europe in Dwingeloo, the Netherlands in VLBI data processing and analysis. following their period of training, they will be in a strong position to support other Hungarian astronomers and geodesists who propose to do VLBI observations using the EVN. The budget foreseen for this activity is 150 KECU for the period 1994 to 1997. -
