Objective
This proposal, entitled "Cytokines in the Brain", aims at enabling scientists from Central and Eastern European countries and New Independent States of the former Soviet Union (PECO scientists) to take part in a network bringing together laboratories actively involved in biological research on the mechanisms of the neural effects of cytokines. Cytokines are primary mediators of communication between the immune system and the brain and play a critical role in the interactions between stress, disease and the brain.
Understanding the mechanisms of the neural effects of these signals is a multi-disciplinary task in which PECO scientists are already involved together with other European laboratories, but of which the success is critically dependent on the availability of high quality reagents and coordination of efforts between scientists from different disciplines, including immunology and neurobiology.
The specific objectives of the present project are (1) to enable PECO scientists to have access to the high quality reagents which are produced and distributed by the Centralized Facility established within the context of the BIOMED Concerted Action "Cytokines in the Brain"; (2) to allow them to establish contacts and conduct collaborative research with Europea, participants in the Concerted Action; (3) to enable them to participate in meetings organized at the international level by European participants; (4) to improve their training in basic aspects of the neurobiology of cytokines.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
