Objective
The aim of orthodontic treatment is the correction of malpositions of the teeth. This is achieved by the application of forces and moments, generated by orthodontic appliances.
The objective of the CAO (computer Aided orthodontics) project is to develop a computer based system, that allows the orthodontist to plan treatments and present the treatment goals to the patient. Moreover, this specialised design system will be used to develop improved appliances with a higher degree of effectiveness and reliability.
Until now, the CAO project consists of the following sub-parts: CAA (computer Aided Analysis, FEM (Finite Element Methods), CAD (computer Aided Design), CAT (computer Aided Testing).
At present, the CAO programme symbolizes teeth by simple stick-objects. An experienced user will be able to recognize the orientations and positions of the presented objects. But, as the system is to be used in clinical practice a vivid graphical presentation is absolutely necessary. The integration of a 3D-graphics tool, called VDP (visual Data presentation), into the CAO programme will enable the orthodontist, regulary a non-professional computer user, to get a realistic imagination of the possible treatment stages. He will be in a position to show his patient the treatment goals and explain the necessary appliances and intermediate treatment steps to him.
The basis of orthodontic treatment planning is the profund education of the orthodontist. His strong background in different treatment cases, orthodontic appliances, and mechanical problems enables him to analyse a large number of different treatment tasks. The integration of expert knowledge into a data base and a computer programme, which applies this knowledae to antnarrow problem area, is called an expert or knowledge based system (KBS) An an future expansion of the CAO proiect, the integration of an orthodontic Expert (OES) was planned. This expert system should allow the CAO programme to fall back upon the knowledge, the experience, and the practice of the orthodontist and supports him in treatment planning and consultation. These two new objectives are distributed among the following institution: VDP Newline, NLS, Bucharest, Rumania
OES IQ Consulting ltd., I.Q. Bucharest, Rumania

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
