Objectif
Oil and gas has been produced from the North Western European onshore and offshore areas for several decades, but little has been done on an international basis to compare gas composition from different gas fields, or to correlate gas composition with provenance.
Substantial amounts of data for gas composition currently exist, a small part in the published literature, the larger part in company records and archives of national geological surveys.
The latter two are protected by confidentiality to a certain extent. There is a wide scatter in reliability and availability of these data. It is the intention of the proposed project to prepare a database of available information, supplement this with a programmed sampling and analysis phase to take account of the more recent discoveries for which there is no published data, and subsequently assemble the data in easily comprehensible format.
In addition sampling techniques and quality control of laboratories will be standardized in the participating countries.
The most important geological province from which gas is produced in these countries is the Permian Basin.
The most eastern extension of this gas province is situated in Poland. Therefor the four partners in the project acknowledged already in an early stage of the project, that participation by Polish scientists and institutes would greatly enhance the final scope of the atlas. Substantial amounts of data about gas composition currently exist also in Poland; a small part in the published literature, but the major part in the records from GEONAFTA (the State Oil Company) and in the archives of the Academy of Mining and Metallurgy (AHG) in Krakow.
It is the intention of the proposed project to extend the area of the original project to the Permian Basin in Poland and prepare a similar database of available information, supplement this with a programmed sampling and analysis phase to take account of the more recent discoveries or for which there are no published data, and subsequently assemble the data in an easily comprehensible format.
In addition the Polish scientists and institutes will participate in the standardization of sampling techniques, the quality control in their laboratories, participate in classifications of gases and the interpretaion of the data.
