Improved procedures for separating crystals from the melt

Objective



SUSPENSION MELT CRYSTALLIZATION HAS THE POTENTIAL OF HIGH SEPARATION EFFICIENCY AT RELATIVELY LOW ENERGY COSTS FOR MANY INDUSTRIALLY IMPORTANT ORGANIC CHEMICALS. THE PROGRAM FOCUSES AT FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF WASH-COLUMN TECHNOLOGY; WHICH IS A POWERFUL SOLID-LIQUID SEPARATION TECHNIQUE CAPABLE OF YIELDING HIGH PRODUCT PURITIES.
TEST SYSTEMS WHICH WILL BE INVESTIGATED ARE CAPROLACTAM/WATER AND PHENOL/WATER OR NAPHTHALENE/THIONAPHTHENE BEING COMPOUNDS OF MAJOR COMMERCIAL IMPORTANCE FOR THE SPONSORS OF THE PROJECT ENICHEM (ITALY) AND NOVEM (THE NETHERLANDS) AS WELL AS FOR THE CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES IN THE PARTICIPATING EASTERN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES.
THE CONTRIBUTION OF CZECH TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY FOCUSSES ON CONTROL OF THE QUALITY OF THE SLURRY FED TO THE WASH-COLUMN. PHASE EQUILIBRIA PREDICT THE MAXIMUM DEGREE OF PURITY; AND CRYSTALLIZATION KINETICS DETERMINE THE CRYSTAL SIZE DISTRIBUTION BEING AN IMPORTANT PARAMETER FOR THE OPERATION OF A WASH-COLUMN.
THE TECHNICAL UNIVERSITY OF WROCLAW WILL FOCUS ON THE EFFECT OF THE CRYSTAL SIZE DISTRIBUTION ON THE PROPERTIES OF THE CRYSTAL BED BY INVESTIGATING THE POSSIBILITY OF REDUCING THE WIDTH OF A CRYSTAL SIZE DISTRIBUTION BY HYDRODYNAMIC FINES REMOVAL. IN ADDITION, THEY WILL HAVE A TASK IN STUDYING THE REMOVAL OF KINETICALLY INCORPORATED IMPURITIES FROM THE CRYSTAL MATRIX BY CONTACTING THE CRYSTALS WITH PURE MELT. THE AIM OF THE WORK OF THE INSTITUTE OF METAL PHYSICS (UKRAIN) IS TO ELABORATE THE PROPER PARAMETERS OF CRYSTALLIZATION PROCESSES IN ORDER TO IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF THE CRYSTALLINE PRODUCT. AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF CRYSTALLIZATION PROCESSES USING PULSED STIRRING (VIBRATION) AND/OR THE ADDITION OF MODIFICATORS WILL BE CARRIED OUT AT A SCALE RELEVANT FOR THE DESIGN OF A PILOT PLANT FOR AN INDUSTRIAL APPLICATION. THE EXECUTION OF THE ADDITIONAL CONTRIBUTIONS WILL BE COORDINATED BY TNO. MOREOVER TNO WILL CONTRIBUTE TO KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER TO THE POLISH CZECH AND UKRAIN CHEMICAL INDUSTRY TO INCREASE THEIR CAPABILITY TO APPLY NEW SEPARATION TECHNIQUES E.G. BY THE ORGANIZATION OF SYMPOSIA.
