Objective
The proposal aims at the development of innovative cost-effective evaporation heat transfer surfaces for compact two-phase heat exchangers. It comprises r&d work of five well-known Eastern European groups, which will be coordinated and integrated in the current JOU2-CT92-0362-project by IKE (work package WPl). The r&d activities are a significant extension of theJOU2-CT94-0362-project.
They will add a large amount of scientific knowledge and technological know how.
The r&d work will concentrate on tubular evaporation heat transfer surfaces and investigate various enhancement techniques.
Both single tubes and tube bundles, tube banks or model heat exchangers will be tested. Both experimental and theoretical work will be carried out. The optimization of the enhanced surfaces requires a thorough understanding of the complex thermofluiddynamic phenomena.
Therefore a careful modelling will be undertaken and computational fluid dynamics tools will be developed.
These design and optimization tools, along with the experimental results, covering a wide range of parameter variations, will be helpful for heat exchanger manufacturers and users, and allow to design cost-effectively optimum heat exchangers for specific applications.
In one work package (WP 2, TGDD) 3-dimensional asymmetrical cavities will be investigated. They not only provide a significant heat transfer enhancement, but possess also the potential to substantially decrease the fouling of heat exchanger surfaces (self-cleaning characteristics). Another work package (WP 3, DTGTU) deals with a compact heat exchanger made up of a bank of tubes with threaded surfaces, which are surrounded by reeled-up wicks for optimum liquid distribution to the evaporation surfaces, viz.the threads.
A further technique (WP 4, MATT) is the combination of micro and macro pores in porous coatings. Optimum pore distribution can be obtained by powder sintering technique.
In another work package (WP 5, TRI) tubes and tube bundles, having spherical cavities on the evaporation surfaces will be investigated. In the last work package (WP 6, HTSL) commercially available enhanced tubes shall be investigated in single tube pool boiling tests, employing different process industry fluids.
