Earth's Core-Mantle Boundary Network

Objective

This proposal is to enhance and extend the COMBO NET to include observations at relatively short range in the Czech Republic. This will allow a planned study of upper mantle phases, and possibly P to S converted phases too, together with a search for steep angle PcP reflections from the Core-Mantle Boundary, which is the main target of the network. It will also give valuable information and guidance on future planning for a proposed very long profile in Europe. Cooperation with an active group in Brno in the Czech Republic should be of mutual benefit, both to the group in Brno and to the existing members of COMBO NET. Up to 2 short-period digital networks and 20 temporary short-period seismic stations will be deployed at the time of the COMBO shots. There will also be observations on broad-band stations in the Czech Republic. This represents a significant additional input to the COMBO project.
