Astronomical Exploitation of the Deep near Infrared Southern Sky Survey

Objective

Consisting of researchers of the Konkoly Observatory and the Astronomy and Atomic Physics Departments of Eotvos Lorand University, there is a working group on statistical studies of the formation and evolution of different subsystems of our Galaxy, as well as the morphologies of other galaxies. The members of our group have expertise in observations, data processing, pattern recognition and statistical analysis.
We are actively involved in the DENIS project, whose ultimate goal is to provide the world astronomical community with a complete, digital map of the entire southern sky, in the near-infrared, making use of the first generation of large-area infrared imaging detectors. This map will allow the study of our Galaxy and its constituents (yielding 100 million stars), as well as the distribution of 200 thousand galaxies in the local Universe. The Hungarian contribution aims at:
- participating to the observational efforts of the DENIS project. - Contributing to the data reduction and software development, adding manpower to the main research centers of the DENIS project.
- Collaborating with the main institutes involved in the survey on the statistical evaluation of the data (such as the reliability analysis of the detected objects), the automatic classification and census of different types of objects, etc.
- Familiarizing the applicants, and through them, their home institutes, with the DENIS data products, so as to use these for their own scientific work.
- Participating in scientific research based upon the data obtained and carried out at the main research centers of the DENIS survey.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
