Objective
DISCRETE MATHEMATICS FORMS THE MATHEMATICAL BASIS FOR COMPUTER TECHNOLOGY. FROM THE FOUNDATIONS OF MATHEMATICS TO PRACTICAL COMPUTER CALCULATIONS IT OFFERS MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS FOR SUCH ESSENTIAL INNOVATIVE FIELDS AS NETWORK DESIGN, OPERATIONS RESEARCH, OPTIMIZATION ALGORITHMS AND CHIP DESIGN (VLSI). MOREOVER, DISCRETE MATHEMATICS DRAWS ON AND CONTRIBUTES TO FUNDAMENTAL RESEARCH IN THE NATURAL SCIENCES, SUCH AS BIOLOGY (GENETICS), CHEMISTRY (MOLECULAR AND CRYSTALLINE STRUCTURES) AND PHYSICS (PERCOLATION). IN THIS WAY, DISCRETE MATHEMATICS THRIVES BOTH AS A MATHEMATICAL THEORY AND THROUGH INTERACTION WITH APPLICATIONS AND TRANSDISCIPLINARY COOPERATION. IN NORTH AMERICA. THIS ROLE OF DISCRETE MATHEMATICS WAS EARLY RECOGNIZED RESULTING IN STRONG FINANCIAL SUPPORT. CONCENTRATED FUNDING EFFORTS HAVE GIVEN AMERICAN MATHEMATICIANS A DECISIVE ADVANTAGE OVER THOSE IN EUROPE. SOME OF THE BEST EUROPEAN MATHEMATICIANS HOLD POSITIONS OVERSEAS, AND YOUNG RESEARCHERS OFTEN HAVE TO GO TRANSATLANTIC FOR THEIR CAREERS. IN EUROPE, MATHEMATICIANS HAVE BEEN DOING EXCELLENT WORK OF THEIR OWN, EACH ON HIS OWN LOCAL BASIS. IT IS INCREASINGLY RECOGNIZED THAT THIS DIVERSITY IS A CULTURAL AND SCIENTIFIC ASSET PARTICULAR TO EUROPE, AN ASSET WHICH IS ALREADY ATTRACTING SUPPORT FROM NATIONAL AGENCIES.
THE AIM OF THE "DIMANET" PROJECT IS TO PROMOTE INTERACTION AND COHESION IN THE RESEARCH ON DISCRETE MATHEMATICS IN EUROPE.PARTICULAR EMPHASIS IS PLACED ON THE ENHANCEMENT OF THE WORK OPPORTUNITIES FOR YOUNG RESEARCHERS, THE POTENTIAL OF THE FUTURE. THE PROJECT BRINGS TOGETHER TWENTY ACTIVE RESEARCH GROUPS COVERING MUCH OF EUROPE, IN A CONCERTED EFFORT TO INSTALL A COHESIVE AND WELL CONNECTED NETWORK: NO SINGLE CENTER SHALL BE DOMINANT, BUT EACH WILL CONTRIBUTE ITS OWN PARTICULAR STRENGTHS TN A JOINT EFFORT TO ADVANCE THE EUROPEAN POSITION IN THIS FAST GROWING INNOVATIVE FIELD. HERE WE PLAN TO LINK PARTNERS IN CENTRAL EUROPE AND RUSSIA TO THE NETWORK. IT IS HOPED THAT PARTNERS FROM OTHER REGIONS WILL JOIN IN THE FUTURE.
THE DIMANET NETWORK FOCUSES ON ALL ASPECTS OF DISCRETE MATHEMATICS, SEEKING INTERACTION BETWEEN THEORY AND APPLICATIONS.ON THIS BROAD RANGE, DIMANET IS DESIGNED TO CONTRIBUTE TO A COMPETITIVE EUROPEAN POSITION WITHIN THE WORLD

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
