Objective
In the workprogramme of the existing HCM network there are two key issues that in particular will benefit from additional (human) capital invested.
Goal A. Develop (strained) semiconductor cathodes for an optimzed e gun; towards a reliable long-lifetime device.
Goal B. A feasibility study for an intense laser-driven electron source with modelocking to radiofrequency of an accelerating structure. The Institute of Semiconductor Physics at Novosibirsk (RU), director Professor A.S.Terekhov has a widely acknowledged reputation in the domain of semiconductor (surface) physics.
The proposed contribution extends the ongoing network efforts sub goal A and sub goal B.
A highly innovative scheme is proposed in which novel cathode surface-engineering is combined with an environment at liquid helium temperature.
This is a promising approach to ultimately implement the optimal electron gun configuration, i.e. the source directly positioned in a superconducting accelerating structure. This project is highly recommended to connect to the existing network.
The second proposal submitted by Prof.R.Melikian concerns the issue of lifetime optimization of electron guns. He proposes to do computer simulations of inconventional cathode-anode geometries with the goal to reduce cathode surface damage by ion-impact and at the same time have a high intensity electron current.
R.Melikian is principal investigator at an accelerator facility with a good reputation and the project can be done.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
