Pan European Environmental GIS & Information Database

Objective

The objective of the project is to plan and selectively apply a geographic information system (GIS) and database structure for integrated regional, rural and environmental planning in the PECO countries (Albania, Bulgaria, Czechoslovakia, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania).

Work will include
pilot application on rural typology and mapping, establishing the basis of a pilot application dealing with the designation and the future of rural areas in the PECO countries
establishment of a detailed description of the EGIS 2000, a long range implementation strategy for all PECO countries
development of the conceptual interconnection of EGIS to EUROSTAT and other organisations.

PROGRESS AND RESULTS

In the period to September 1994, experience with the MEDORA system has been gained, rural statistical data for PECO countries has been collected, and preliminary estimates made of rural typologies in PECO countries.
