Application of Hardware Based Fuzzy Logic Controller for Adaptive Pacemakers

Objective

The aim of the research is to develop an analogue fuzzy logic controller for a self-adaptive pacemaker. A new technology is proposed for designing and manufacturing a new generation of pacemakers or for improving the existing ones by a more reliable control and by appropriate adaptation procedures.

The pacemaker should be adaptive to the load of the heart as well as to the individual characteristics of the patient. The analogue fuzzy logic controller will handle the adaptive tuning of a pacemaker. It is meant to be manufactured as a custom integrated circuit in CMOS technology. An analogue CMOS implementation will help to keep the chip complexity, size and power consumption sufficiently low.

INFORMATION DISSEMINATION ACTIVITIES AND EXPLOITATION

The results will be presented in appropriate journals and conferences: IEEE Journal of Solid-State Circuits, Fuzzy Sets and Systems, ESSCIRC, Eurochip workshops.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
