Resultados aprovechables
WELL-GIS reinforces the exchange of knowledge and the technology transfer for GIS (Geographical Information Systems) at organization, as well as individual level, integrating the experiences of the EU Countries with the professional and academic skills in Central and Eastern European Countries. The partners are mainly Universities and Research Centres, but they have become a sort of national local node of the project, committed to involve other entities, especially companies. WELL-GIS promotes training and research activities by forming a communications network between the project partners, holding workshops, encouraging staff from Eastern and Central European countries to undertake placements in EU institutions and establishing three GIS databases that are available on the web. Land and urban planning, GIS and environmental management, Remote Sensing and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) are the application fields addressed by the results.
Geographical Information (GI) is a complex and rapidly growing part of the Information Society. As such, it can play a vital role in areas as diverse as marketing studies, land management, health care, political analysis, environmental issues, and renewable energy resources and their use. However, although the use of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) is widespread in Western Europe, the status is different in Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). Hence the West-East Linked Laboratories on GIS project (WELL-GIS), launched in January 1995 to improve co-operation in this field between Central and Eastern European scientists and their EU counterparts. The target was to encourage local commercial companies to become involved with the network and to use its facilities, and to work closely with each other towards the creation of a co-operation framework for developing GI applications
