The research aims at a parallel computing solution for the simulation of waste disposal and contaminant transport in the ground. It addresses a problem of major practical importance, particularly in Central and Eastern Europe and essentially involves the migration of existing finite-element-based and distinct-element-based codes to operation in a parallel environment.
The results achieved by the research can be summarized as follows:
New parallel software available for both research and commercial use.
Improved design of landfill sites and toxic waste disposal repositories will be possible using the software produced.
Improved safety assessments will be possible at embankment dams, tailing dams, toxic waste sites. Landfill sites and potential high level nuclear waste repositories in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe are involved.
Improved understanding of soil behaviour will be possible (via the use of the new codes to further explore aspects of the physical phenomenon under consideration) that has hitherto proved impossible to achieve.
