Objective
Novel high vanadium high carbon high speeds have been developed to be sintered below 1150 C. Modified high carbon high vanadium HSSs were laboratory sintered to full density (>97% T.D) at temperatures below 1150 C under nitrogen rich atmospheres. After this, cold compacted powders were sintered to full density in an industrial continuous mesh belt furnace, using a nitrogen rich atmospheres. After being heat treated in vacuum furnaces, three point bend tests were carried out. Once the sintering and heat treating parameters were established, milling tools and twist drills, were tested in cutting operations, their performance being satisfactory. For cutting wood, the cutting performance of the HSS milltools produced in this project is better than that of commercial cemented carbide. The results obtained are conclusive: not only is the sintering in continuous furnaces possible, but the related mechanical properties and cutting performance are similar to those reported in the literature for conventional HSS with similar hardness.
Continuous sintering of near net shape compacted water atomised high speed steel (HSS) powders to full density at low temperatures in a gas atmosphere offers an innovative route to the production of several kinds of tools dies and engineering components. Sintering of HSS powders, in an atmosphere rich in nitrogen, as well as the technological and economic benefits of decreasing the sintering temperature and widening the sintering gate compared to vacuum sintering, offers several benefits : microstructural control (finer grain sizes, finer carbonitrides instead of massive carbides) and improved mechanical properties originating from the novel composition and improved microstructures. These superior mechanical properties will provide enhanced support for hard material coatings. Therefore the objectives of the present project are to obtain fully dense parts by continuous sintering in atmosphere using current industrial furnaces and the optimisation of the heat treatments of such parts. Given the potential for cost saving with low temperature atmosphere sintering, and for improved microstructure, mechanical properties and performance in service, this project offers the prospect of significant competitive advantage to European manufacturers of tools and wear parts.
