Objectif
The main objective of this project has been the development of discontinuously reinforced Copper Matrix Composite (CMCs) by relatively non-expensive casting techniques, as well as the manufacturing of three industrial prototypes for different applications: a wear resistant component (mechanical bearing), an electrical component (spot welding electrode), and an electronic component (called PCB, Printed-Circuit-Board). A suitable production technology has been optimized for the copper based composite selected for each of those components in function of their main requirements under service conditions. In general, the copper based composites developed have shown improved properties over the corresponding unreinforced matrices, above all a lower coefficient of thermal expansion and coefficient of friction, a lower density, a higher hardness as well as better wear properties. So, these composites can open up new markets for pure copper and its alloys, markets which are not feasible at this moment due to their main drawbacks.
