Qualitative simulation of heating ventilating and air conditioning systems in buildings

Objetivo

Up to now Heating Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems used in Buildings are considered as a number of different types of components. The next step to improve HVAC systems will be to consider them as a whole and to take into account the interaction between the different components. A practical way to take into account the interaction between the different components is to use simulation software. This software enables the assessment of a modification of one component on the performances of the whole HVAC system.
One of the key points of this project consists in developing easy to use mathematical models of the different parts of HVAC systems (boilers, radiators, pumps, fans, chillers, heat exchangers, BEMS, controllers, actuators) of the building which is installed. Indeed it appears today that companies developing one part of the HVAC system are not able to simulate the behaviour of the other parts because existing models are too difficult to use. The models developed will be easy to use because the knowledge about the typology of the different parts will be encapsulated inside them. The user of the model will then only have to describe the components in qualitative (fuzzy) terms, that means in terms of High, Low, Medium, Poor, Good. He or she will just have to define in which class of the typology the component is included. As it appears that the specialist of one field generally has a qualitative knowledge of the other fields, this approach will enable people from different fields to work with the same models. The objectives of this research are :
- To develop a set of qualitative mathematical models of buildings and HVAC components. These models will be implemented in simulation software. This simulation software will then be used by the manufacturers to develop and to test new products. The core of the project is the development of the component models.
- An improved test procedure to test the functionality of HVAC components by using a simulated building and simulated installations instead of a real building and real installations. The HVAC component to be tested is a real component connected to the so called emulator.
The innovative parts of this proposal are :
- The models will be developed in order to be easily used as a basic design tool by HVAC component engineers.
- An improved design and test procedure for components in HVAC systems in buildings.
