Objetivo
An underground fire hydrant is a fitting that has been directly connected to the drinking water mains. Fire hydrants are used to tap drinking water from the water mains for fire fighting and other, purposes. The design, production and material usage of large fittings are very much outdated. The proposed R&D must lead to the application of new materials and production techniques for the manufacture of fittings in general, but more particularly to an innovative design for fire hydrants that complies with new European Standards.
Technological problems to be solved through the research proposal are: - developing a relatively inexpensive, lightweight, and maintenance-free fire hydrant;
- developing a modulair low-cost mould, able to produce various sizes; - investigate low-pressure injection-moulding of large plastic casing; - developing a flexible assembly system for simultaneous assembly and testing.
