Development of life-time adjustable geotextiles based on plant fibres

Objective

The objective of the proposed project is to characterize properties and life time of new. cost-elfective, environmental friendly geotextiles, to be used as erosion control systems and temporary building constructions or in agriculture and horticulture. These natural geotextiles are based on fibrous plant materials, such as locally available. low-cost agricultural waste materials as straw which is available in the European Community, flax, esparto or imported coir, sisal or jute. Although these biodegradable, natural fibre products have large potentials in civil engineering, their contribution on geotextile markets is only marginal. This is mainly caused by the lack of application profiles, including a guarantee or indication of durability and degradability, mechanical strength properties and hydraulic properties. Information on technical data of natural geotextiles, including life time and biodegradability, is therefore essential for introduction of these products on the market. Natural geotextiles, prepared from different materials or by different processing methods, largely vary in life time and properties. In order to adjust properties of geotextiles and its application, knowledge on mechanisms and treatments that affect durability is also required.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
