Objective
Wear of bores and the associated tribological aspects of surfaces is a major area of failure and inefficiency affecting the mechanical engineering sector. Many components rely upon the maintenance of surface integrity and dimensional accuracy for performance. The application of hard coatings to internal bores will be investigated and techniques developed to solve many engineering problems. The application of hard ceramic coatings will extend machine life and will bring added benefits such as surface modifications to enhance, for example, oil retention and debris removal. PVD techniques using unbalanced magnetron sputtering or arc evaporation will be used to optimise surface properties. Substrate surfaces will also be optimised to complement the active ceramic coatings.
Applications for this technology are the many moving bore/piston devices in reciprocating engines. Other specific areas include firing mechanisms for military applications and the moving parts associated with textile manufacture.
It has been demonstrated, contrary to the perceived wisdom, that PVD techniques can be used to successfully coat down bores and it is the function of this proposal to conduct the research necessary to achieve this goal.
