CONSTRUCTION OF A PLANT TO STUDY THERMAL DRYING PELLETISATION AND FLUIDIZED BED COMBUSTION OF COAL FINES

Objective

To improve the handling of coal fines by removal of clay elements, drying and mixing with coarser material (or a combination of all three) to provide a more marketable fuel particularly to power stations. As part of this process the project calls for preparation of a pelletised fuel to supplant fines for power stations, to demonstrate the application of a fluidized bed furnace to burn low grade colliery waste as a source of cheap energy for colliery operations and to reduce costs and environmental problems associated with the dumping of waste fines.
Contract covered construction of plant which was completed. The second (demonstration and evaluation) phase has not been carried out under an EEC contract.
This project is located at Hem Heath Colliery and includes construction of a 20 MW fluidized bed furnace, a rotary kiln dryer of 3. 5 m dia and 20 m in length, an inclined pair pelletizer of 4 m dia together with all ancilliary systems.
The rotary kiln dryer has a 100 T/h throughput (60 T/h wet material and 40 T/h recycled dried coal product) and output of 83 to 87 T/h. The pelletizer is fed with a small quantity of cement.
Cleaned fines will be produced via froth flotation, then dried and pelletized for use as a component of power station fuel. By using frothed fines as a fluidized bed furnace fuel, and a rotary kiln dryer, moisture content will be reduced from 31% to 5% at the rate of 60 T/h. It is planned, as a second phase, that the process will be monitored for one year to assess operational and maintenance experience; behaviour of thermally dried fines in storage and handling;characteristics of power station blends which include thermally dried fines, the suitability of pellets, produced from dried fines, for handling, storage and combustion; and the overall benefits of the process.
Total costs are estimated at 4,195,356 and payback at 9 months.
