PULVERIZED COAL FIRED COMBINED HEAT AND POWER GENERATING UNIT

Objetivo

To demonstrate the viability of replacing an oil fired district heating unit by an indirectly pulverized coal-fired combined heat and power generating unit. Oil savings of 5,800 TOE and energy savings of 2,800 TOE are projected. In addition, SO2 emissions are forecasted to decrease by +- 200 T/y.
IFV Power Company has at the Technical University of Denmark planned and erected a small pulverized coal-fired combined heat and power generating unit. During the 1986-87 heating season, the unit was operated with an operator present. From October 1987, it was operated unmanned but with remote control from the Kyndby Power Station 50 km away. The aim was to build a unit in all respects complying with the operating facilities of an oil-fired boiler. This has proved to be feasible. In this way it has been made technically possible to replace oil by coal at small and medium-sized boilers. The experiences concerning unmanned operation and remote control can be used in other projects with feasible types of technology.
Due to unforeseen problems, occuring during design and commissioning of the innovative part of the project, the total investment costs have amounted to 44. 2 mill. DKK and not to 30. 7 mill. DKK as expected.
Expected oil displacement (by coal) of 5. 800 TOE. Expected energy savings of 2. 800 TOE due to combined production.
On successful termination of the project, these expectations are assumed to be reached. However, a full heating season has not yet been passed after the final minor modifications.
Comparing the actual project with the possibility of building a simple oil-fired unit producing heat only, the expected annual savings were 4. 2 mill DKK (1984). Due to a dramatic fall of fuel prices with decreasing gap between oil and coal-prices, the same comparison shows (in 1986-87) an annual deficit of approximately 2. 8 mill. DKK. Based on the present fuel-prices the building of a similar plant is therefore not profitable.
However, the techniques developed, such as pulverized coal transport, indirect firing and unmanned operation, can give experience to similar energy projects.
The project involves the installation of a pulverized coal fired boiler plant for steam production to a back-pressure turbine -generator set; development of a special silo container transport system for pulverized coal transport; and a central milling plant.
* BOILER & FIRING PLANT
Consists of an indirectly fired pulverized coal burner: can also use natural gas for start-up and low load. Coal is pulverized at a different location and transported in special containers.
The combustion chamber is placed vertically with a single burner at the top of the combustion chamber. A swirl burner is used to secure against drop. A special lining in the combustion chamber raises the temperature to enhance large particle combustion. Steam temperature of
530 deg. C. is required. The boiler produces steam up to 24 T/h at 62 Bar
* COAL PULVERIZER
Coal is pulverized centrally at one of IFV's power stations and transported +- 50 Km in special silos. Dehydration of pulverized coal increases its calorific value, reducing the quantity to be transported by 9%.
* SILO CONTAINER TRANSPORT SYSTEM
The silos have a capacity of 42 m3 or 21 Tons. The same silo is used during pulverizing, transport and consumption, thus minimising risk of fire and explosion as well as reducing overall cost.
The silos are transported by a special semi-trailer which keeps the container in a vertical position during loading and unloading. Total costs are projected to be DKR 30. 7 million.
