Objetivo
To install pulverised coal enrichment units with a flame monitoring system on the tangential burners at the Blenod power station to reduce the boiler's minimum operating threshold during low load periods while maintaining combustion without using oil to sustain the combustion.
Pulverised coal burning boilers at thermoelectric power stations currently use hydrocarbon fuel burners to sustain boiler combustion during periods of low operating conditions.
If this low combustion threshold can be reduced, while at the same time minimising risk of boiler extinction, then hydrocarbon consumption would be reduced significantly.
This project is intended to test a pulverised coal enrichment system on the auxiliary burners of a 250 MWe boiler unit at the Blenod power station. If successful, this will minimise the number of temporary combustion stoppages and the need to re-ignite, a procedure which results in heavy consumption of hydrocarbon fuels. If successful, the system will be used at other units in the power station.
The system consists of a coal crushing mill, pulverised coal enriched burners and one flame detecting cell for each burner. These enrichment units are special devices fitted to the coal mill output: they set-up a whirl of primary air and pulverisedcoal mixture. This is then separated into two flows. One is enriched with coal to maintain flame stability in all operating conditions: the other is enriched with air, and both proceed to the existing burners.
The burner nozzle is especially adapted to cope with coal enriched flow. The flame detection system is based on the ratio between the red and infrared bands emitted by the flame, using photoelectric cells and a signal conditioning unit.
The detection system is connected to the boiler control console.
With pulverised coal enriched burners, the 250 MWe unit is expected to show significantly reduced consumption of hydrocarbon fuel, achieving overall annual savings of 400 TOE. The four phase project is scheduled to commence on January 15, 1987, ending May 1989 at a total cost of FF 7,869,000 on which payback is estimated at 1.9 years.
