Objective
The aim of this project is to achieve maximum NOx reduction with low UBC for minimum investment and operation costs by primary (in furnace), measures in (new) P.C. fired utility and industrial plants, by demonstrating this low NOx system in an existing P.C. fired 180 MWe utility boiler, for 4 coal types. This will reduce the need and/or the size of the more expensive (catalytic) flue gas denoxing (SCR, with reduction rates up to 90%).
Preliminary evaluation of the results for the three coal types indicates that the expectations of this research and demonstration project will be fulfilled : for coal-firing, NOx-reduction of up to 60%, corresponding with the calculated values were achieved. The unburned carbon in fly ash was, as predicted, higher than the above mentioned 2,6% guarantee for gas-firing. The NOX-reduction has been about 85% under demonstration circumstances.
The performance of the boiler is as good as it was before retrofit, with 2 exceptions :
- several burner parts were damaged due to overheating
- after one year of operation several steam explosions occurred in the water of the clinker hopper, caused by porous, crushable slag, damaging the ash removal doors.
Measures are taken to deal with these phenomena.
Retrofit of an opposed fired, dry-bottom, medium-size utility boiler (580 t/h steam) with 16 newly developed low NOx gas/pulverized coal burners of the HTNR (High-Temperature NOx Reduction) type, and installing 8 new After-Air-Ports. This will reduce the NOx emission by about 50 %, whilst UBC (unburned carbon in fly ash) will be small compared to the convemtional double-register burners; guaranteed is 2,6 % UBC, for at least one coal type.
First application of gas/coal dual-fuel HTNR burner.
First application of HTNR burners in Europe.
First application of Two-Stage Combustion for opposed coal firing.
Simulation of In-Furnace NOx Reduction (IFNR).
