Objective
The testing was aimed at identifying the elements that were still missing to achieve a degree of technical reliability of the CWM combustion technology similar to that of the conventional fulls.
Moreover, the following had to be ensured:
- compliance with the pollution limits set by EEC standards in force
- development of a system for the utilization of the mixtures adequate to justify from a technical point of view the use of the technology on an industrial scale.
- functional operability of the equipment similar to that of the conventional systems and adequate to justify from an economic point of view the application of the technology on a commercial and industrial scale.
- The objectives of the research project were satisfactorily achieved.
- The experimental procedures and results have not shown any serious shortcomings
- Design parameters for industrial applications have been determined
-The CWM combustion characteristics have been investigated
- Boiler performance data were assessed and gaseous pollutants figures were in accordance with EEC limits
- Further research work must be done to solve the problems pointed out during combustion tests:
. the strategic use of wear resistant materials has been recognized - a long term operation test (over 1000 hours) is recommended;
. the reliability of scaled-up burners for future industrial applications is to be checked with full scale demonstration tests in a realistic environment.
Experimentation on an industrial scale was required to achieve the combustion technology development objectives.
This experimentation included the following activities:
- market investigation aimed at selecting burners mfr's who were interested in a further development at high concentration CWM combustion technology
- selection of a plant with characteristics meeting the research objectives and the general lines suggested by the burners mfr's.
- adjustments in the boiler selected for the experimentation and installation of the necessary instruments
- development of a research methodology aimed first at determining an optimum configuration of the burner's and boiler's functional parameters and then at collecting the operating data in steady operating condition
- trials execution
- analysis of the results and issuing of final report.
