Objective
ACTION aims to help family carers maintain the autonomy, independence and quality of life for frail elderly and disabled people by the application of telematics technology. Through a combination of familiar technologies (eg the carers' own TV and remote control units,) and additional technologies, (eg video reception/transmission, fast computer processors and access to interactive communication), on-line effective care information communication can become a reality for formal and informal carers. One work package will identify user needs and the other will set standards of operation, protocols and telematics presence. Four main areas are covered: direct practical assistance to develop skills; respite care choice/eliciting support/longterm planning; improving coping skills; and availability of financial resources. After testing, results will be sent to European voluntary and healthcare organisations, user groups, professional and academic staff, and to the healthcare industries.
