Objective
80% of the hearing-impaired population maintain that extraneous noise in hearing aids and telephones is a major source of annoyance and discomfort. The project aims to improve listening comfort by introducing noise reduction (NR) technology into hearing instruments and telephones, particularly GSM equipment, as noise is present in most mobile communications. Up till now the main limiting factor in NR has been the non-stationary nature of background noise. New NR technology able to cope with non-stationary background noise will be used, which can achieve an average 10 decibel gain of SNR, at low cost, consuming little power, and with considerable and swift market potential. After 9 months this user-driven project will be demonstrated, field tested, fine-tuned and miniaturised for eventual widescale testing by users in several countries.
