PERSONAL ADAPTIVE MOBILITY AID FOR THE FRAIL AND ELDERLY VISUALLY IMPAIRED

Objetivo

Over 65% of all blind people are over 70 years old, and with increasing age, infirmity prevents the use of common mobility aids such as long canes and guide dogs, and often confines them to bed for their own safety. This results in rapid deterioration of their mental health and the cardio-pulmonary system. The PAM-AID intelligent mobility aid enables users to regain personal autonomy, avoiding complete dependence on carers. This navigational and physical support warns of and avoids obstacles ahead, and has three levels of use. Under human control the system simply issues warnings of obstacles detected, only intervening if grave danger threatens. With unsupervised control the system navigates, avoiding obstacles within its sensor range. With shared control the system minimises the risk of collision by making small adjustments to the user's path. The device is sensitive to both static and moving obstacles/risks, and users can switch freely between modes.
