Objective
Persistent heavy snoring - otherwise known as Obstructive Sleep Apnea - is the most common form of the Sleep Apnea Syndrome (SAS), which is prevalent in 3% of the general population. It can lead to sleep deprivation, daytime sleepiness and eventually cardiovascular complications, and is defined by the cessation of airflow at nose and mouth for more than 10 seconds and 10 apnea per hour of sleep. Current medical treatment for this is often unacceptable to patients, yet one pathophysiological factor is rarely taken in account: upper airway dilator muscles'deficiency. TOSAFES will explore this and counteract it by means of electrical stimulation from a respiration monitor. With a central command box for analysing input data and order output data, and implanted electrodes, this will stimulate the hypoglossal nerves in a continuous intermittent fashion to prevent apnea. The system will be verified on an animal model of SAS, then if free of side effects, be demonstrated on patients.
