DEVELOPMENT AND VALIDATION OF NEW ASSISITIVE DEVICES FOR THE TREATMENT OF DISABILITY CAUSED BY TREMOR

Objective

This project develops technological aids for patients with cerebellar tremor. Particularly characteristic of patients affected by Multiple Sclerosis (MS), this tremor severely hampers everyday life. Three aids will be developed: first, a sensorized system recording all the kinematics parameters of the upper limbs and neck during natural tremor-affected movements. It will be linked to a graphical component representing the recorded movements of the upper limbs in a simulated scenario. The second is a 2- degrees of freedom (DOF) "joystick" to dampen hand tremor vibrations and extract characteristics of voluntary movements. This can allow both children and adults to use computer applications and control wheelchairs and robotics aids. The third is a hand-held haptic (ie touch-sensitive) device for controlling manipulative tasks. No such rehabilitation aids are as yet available on the market.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.
