WAI-TIDE removes Web accessibility barriers for people with disabilities. A series of actions have been undertaken:
- educational outreach for web developers,
- accessibility labelling system and database,
- user forum co-ordination,
- publication of guidelines.
This contributes to the Web development and growth as a real economic tool by enlarging the user base and therefore the market. More importantly, it contributes to the equal opportunities policy of the EU by allowing equal access to on-line information for people with disabilities. The technology used throughout the action is the core Web technologies such as HTML (Hypertext Mark-up Language), CSS (Style Sheet), PICS (Platform for Internet Content Selection) and the tools surrounding them.
Once the web is made accessible through its formats, protocols, tools and content, a disability, whether it is permanent (like a visual or hearing impairment) or temporary (like a person driving a car or without the proper equipment on a computer) should never be a barrier to accessing information. This is what WAI-TIDE is about.
