FEASIBILITY STUDY AND SUPRACONDUCTIVE MAGNETIC ACCUMULATOR

Objective

To study the feasibility of building a supraconductive magnetic accumulator to test its suitability as a regulator for medium to high load electricity networks.

Supraconductive Magnetic Accumulators (SMAs) have been suggested as far back as the late 1960s as a means of equalising peak loads in large electricity networks. In a SMA, a supraconductive coil is connected to the DC terminals of the rectifier, itself connected to the AC of the network via transformers. By monitoring the rectifier, the SMA can regulate the active power when needed and the reactive power on a continuous basis. It can be used to regulate single equipment as well as complete city or industrial networks.
A SMA has already been tested in the USA by the Los Alamos National Laboratory, showing that an industrial test is feasible. Another trial is required however as the conditions and type of applications need be redefined in order to choose the best possible demonstration programme. Indeed, too large a demonstration could entail severe technical and financial difficulties while in a programme too small, the cost of refrigeration could kill the economic interest in theproject. Furthermore the possibility to locate SMAs underground also justify a study of the economics of urban siting.
The project will last 12 months throughout 1986 and entail :
- technical evaluation of the type of SMAs and potential applications
- estimation of the construction costs and returns
- definition of the subsequent phases (i. e. construction, testing ).
The project will aim at selecting the most appropriate size and end -use for the lowest possible technical and financial risks.
The selection process will be helped by small scale trials run previously (1984-86) by Alsthom in Belfort.
