Feasibility study of databases and web site for the adoption of LCA in SMEs

Objective

The introduction of the Integrated Product Policy (IPP) and Life Assessment (LCA) for the EU's sustainable development requires a large number of Life Cycle Inventories (LCIs) containing structured data about impacts of materials, processes, energy, transportation, that are available with critical limitations.
Moreover, the application of Ecodesign through LCA by SMEs needs a simplified methodology, with specialised and validated databases for different industrial sectors, and testing new form of consulting, for example by Internet as tested in the USA.
The overall aim of ELCA is the analysis of the availability and structure of public information and private data for LCA (methods of collection, harmonising, updating) with the existing differences in EU countries (regulations, socio-economic context, including multilingual aspects). The technical economical feasibility of a Web site for the adoption of LCA by SMEs, trailing new forms of interactive consulting, training, benchmarking and public/private partnership, and thus, the implementation of a prototype to test the Web site by a case study on a sample of SMEs.
