Objective
Project EURACTIV is a policy and technology initiative aimed at developing a multilingual portal dedicated to European Union (EU) affairs.

- to implement a working prototype of a policy portal www.euractiv.com
- to promote a pan-European multilingual Information Society
- to validate a business model ensuring the portal's economic viability
The EURACTIV site has been conceived of as a multilingual portal from its inception. It plans to make extensive use of state-of-art machine translation technologies, keeping its localisation budget to a moderate level. The site will be private sector oriented, relying on non-public sources of revenue to fund itself.
Results: The project has a 3-phase approach: Prototype (implementation); Consolidation (populating with content); and Expansion (expanding the portal's scope).
The expected results emerging from EURACTIV are:
- a working prototype of an EU policy portal site www.euractiv.com
- a demonstration of the feasibility of large-scale multilingual web sites through the use of machine translation technologies a validated business model for sustaining such a public sector portal through private sector revenue.
