EDI in the International Transport Industry

Objective

Main objective of the EDITRANS project is to demonstrate the viability of automatic data interchange in selected organisations throughout Europe.

EDI messages to be used will be based on the IFTM Message Framework that has been developed to EDIFACT standards. So it is hoped that EDITRANS will in general promote the adoption of standardised EDI messages based on EDIFACT rules.
A framework from which these messages might be developed has already been designed., This framework called IFTM is both international and intermodal and parts have already been tested in live trials during the European Research and Demonstration Project, COST-306. Members forming the project team of COST-306 bringing the experience gained from that project will now start work on the EDITRANS project.
EDI as demonstrated in this project will enable the data that cover the international transport of consignments to be transmitted directly from the EDP system of one party in the transport chain directly into that of the next party. By such means of electronic transmission of transport data, the industry can ensure that the data concerning a consignment can arrive at its destination prior to the arrival of the consignment itself, thereby enabling parties concerned to organise on-going transport details before the arrival of the consignment. Overall this should achieve a reduction in transit time with an increased degree of information reliability.
Currently the majority of transport related data is communicated via telex or fax often requiring typing and re-typing with resulting mistakes and delays. When such data is transmitted directly from one EDP system to another the communication will be faster and practically error-free. However, since sender and receiver will likely be running EDP systems based on differing hardware and software, before commencing EDI exchange still a number of requirements must be met.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
