Objective
THIS PROJECT HAS A FOLLOW-UP IN A CEC DEMONSTRATION PROJECT WHERE THE ECONOMIC AND TECHNICAL FEASIBILITY WILL BE DEMONSTRATED.
A MARKET STUDY FOR GAS-GAS HEAT EXCHANGERS IN THE COMMON MARKET, CARRIED OUT BY IFP, SHOWED THAT THE POTENTIAL ENERGY SAVINGS FOR PREHEATING OF AIR FOR FURNACES IS 2 X 10EXP6 TOE. (THIS STUDY DID NOT INCLUDE THE GLASS, METALLURGGY AND TEXTILE INDUSTRY FOR WHICH NO DETAILED DATA WERE AVAILABLE). MAIN IMPEDIMENTS TO INSTALLATION WERE LACK OF SPACE AND HIGH INSTALLATION COSTS, WHICH CAN BE 1,5 TO 4 TIMES THE COST OF THE HEAT EXCHANGER. WITH THESE DATA IN MIND, IFP STARTED THE DESIGN OF A MODULAR COMPACT HEAT EXCHANGER.
THE SYSTEM UNDER DEVELOPMENT CAN ACCEPT GASES UP TO 400 DEGREES C AND COULD HAVE A DUTY OF TYPICALLY 650 KW. IT HAS SIZE ADVANTAGES OVER COMPETING SYSTEMS AND ITS MODULAR CONSTRUCTION SHOULD LEAD TO LOWER INSTALLATION COSTS. THIS COMPACT GAS-GAS HEAT EXCHANGER IS EASY TO MANUFACTURE, HAS LOW PRESSURE DROPS AND IS EASY TO CLEAN. THE EXCHANGER CONSISTS OF A BLOCK FORMED BY THE STACKING OF PERFORATED METAL PLATES WHOSE APERTURES CREATE THE FLUID FLOW PASSAGES. THE DIFFERENT PLATE PERFORATION GEOMETRIES, TESTED IN THE LABORATORY ON SMALL MODELS (EXCHANGE AREA ABOUT 0,35 M2) SHOWED THE POSSIBILITY OF ATTAINING SPECIFIC AREAS OF 125 M2/M3 AND HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENTS OF UP TO 70 W/M2 DEGREES C. THE DATA OBTAINED FROM THESE TESTS SERVED AS A BASIS FOR THE DESIGN OF AN INDUSTRIAL PROTOTYPE (EXCHANGE AREA : 12,5 M2). THE TESTS OF THIS PROTOTYPE CARRIED OUT ON A 1,6 MW BOILER, WITH EXHAUST GAS FLOWRATE OF THE ORDER OF 2000 M3/H AND OUTLET TEMPERATURES OF UP TO 400 DEGREES C SHOWED A GOOD AGREEMENT WITH LABORATORY RESULTS. THEY ALSO DEMONSTRATED THAT SPECIFIC HEAT TRANSFERS IN EXCESS OF 5 KW/M3 DEGREES C COULD BE ACHIEVED. THIS CORRESPONDS TO A SPECIFIC HEAT TRANSFER OF ABOUT 1200 KW/M3 (FOR EXHAUST GAS ENTERING AT 400 DEGREES C) WHICH IS TEN TIMES HIGHER THAN THE VALUE OFFERED BY TUBULAR HEAT EXCHANGERS. HEAT TRANSFER COEFFICIENTS OBTAINED WERE BETWEEN 25 AND 70 W/M2 DEGREES C DEPENDING ON THE THROUGHPUT (5 % DEVIATION WERE OBSERVED BETWEEN EXPERIMENTAL AND CALCULATED RESULTS).
AN ECONOMIC STUDY INDICATED THAT THE COST OF THIS HEAT EXCHANGER BEFORE INSTALLATION IS BETWEEN 15 AND 30 % LOWER THAN THE COST OF CONVENTIONAL EQUIPMENT. IN ADDITION LOWER INSTALLATION COSTS ARE POSSIBLE DUE TO THE COMPACTNESS OF THE NEW UNIT.
