Objetivo LARGE QUANTITIES OF WASTE HEAT ARE PRESENTLY DISCHARGED (E.G. IN INDUSTRY, POWER PLANT, URBAN WASTE INCINERATION) WHICH MAY BE USED IN WINTER FOR HEATING, IF CHEAP LONG TERM HEAT STORAGE WOULD BE AVAILABLE. ONE OF THE FEW OPTIONS IS STORAGE OF HOT WATER IN SUBSOIL WATER CONDUCTING LAYERS OF TYPICALLY 20 M HIGH WHICH BELOW AND ABOVE ARE THERMALLY INSULATED BY NATURAL CLAY LAYERS. THE HOT WATER IS BROUGHT IN AND EXTRACTED FROM THE AQUIFER WITH A DOUBLET OF DRILLED HOLES. CEA/SNEA, FRANCE MADE AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF SUCH AN AQUIFER HEAT STORAGE SYSTEM NEAR PARIS. THE AQUIFER IS 508 M DEEP AND THE FEASIBILITY OF STORING HEAT UP TO 180 DEGREES C WAS INVESTIGATED. THE RESULTS OF THIS STUDY WERE PROMISING AND THE CONSTRUCTION OF A HEAT STORAGE SYSTEM FOR ABOUT 5000 HOUSES IS NOW ENVISAGED. THIS PROJECT HAS A FOLLOW-UP IN A CEC DEMONSTRATION PROJECT.
