COMBUSTION OF WASTE ACID TARS TO SAVE ENERGY AND TO AVOID ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION

Objective

To demonstrate that a fluidized bed combustion plant can burn acid tars and waste oils without additional energy in a manner which absolutely avoids environmental pollution and generates process steam using the hot waste gas.
The plant was in operation for more than 7 000 hours up to the end of the project. It was successfully tested and, for the most part, found to be operationally safe. In the course of this demonstration period acid tars (calorific value approximately 18 600 KJ/Kg) and waste oils (calorific value approximately 27 900 KJ/Kg) were burned and simultaneously steam was produced for the process. The design data of the plant were attained after optimization. The throughput capacity is given as 2.5 T/H creosote or waste oil. The steam generating capacity amounts to 3.5 T/H at 11 Bar in the rated load point. The bed temperature is around 800 deg. C. and the combustion chamber temperature around 700 deg.C. Combustion takes place at an excess air ratio of approximately 20%. The thermal efficiencies reached values of between 78% and 86% depending on the waste material used. The start-up to full load time is 4 hours from a cold condition and 2 hours after week-end shutdown. Start-up is effectedvia 2 oil or gas-fired start up burners. The emission values were either met or were below the emission standards specified by the UK authorities (particulates lead SO3 SO2 plume value).Deborah, established in 1975, is the only company to design and develop a fluidised bed boiler, which combusts acid tar waste as its fuel. This boiler (installed at Tenneco Chemicals, Avonmouth) is the result of many years research, is unique in design, and exclusive to Deborah. The same combustion technology can be applied to the efficient, clean combustion of coal, oil and gas.
A prototype plant with a power of 4 MW was erected and tested on the premises of Tenneco Organics Ltd in Avonmouth. The plant is a process steam plant equipped with a fluidized bed combustion facility for the combustion of residual waste from the processing of used oil in which all fuel engineering and thermal aspects are suited to each other. The patented circulating fluidized bed process should eliminate the disadvantages of conventional or vertical fluidized bed systems and lead to the total combustion of residual waste with low calorific values too. The bed material gases and feedstock circulate in a controlled manner in the fluidized bed on a roughly eliptical path. As a result of the horizontal and vertical turbulances intensive mixing takes place and there is a relatively uniform distribution in the fluidized bed. A membrane wall boiler with overhead header is used as steam generator. This membrane wall boiler is in direct contact with the approximately 800 deg. C. hot fluidized bed in the main combustion chamber. The flue gases are cooled down to a temperature of about 300 deg. C. in a further step. The plant is equipped with a multi-cell cyclone to meet the specified limit values for the fine dust in the waste gas. Following erection the efficiency of the plant is to be examined and demonstrated over a longer operating period.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
