INTEGRATED ENERGY SYSTEM

Objective

The objective of the project was to reduce the process steam and therefore the fuel requirements of the Soporcel Bleached Kraft Pulp Mill. The projected savings were a reduction of 0.6 tonnes of steam per tonne of pulp produced, saving about 12 % of total process steam equivalent to 8262 TOE per year fuel saving.
The project has been implemented according to programme and it has been operating without any problems.L% A total effective saving of 0.5 tonnes of steam/ADMT pulp is estimated and all process steam saved has resulted in bark savings. There was an additional cost as a result of reduced cogeneration of electrical power when expanding high pressure to low pressure (LP) steam. Therefore cost savings on this mill are based on lower cost of purchased bark/wood waste as the marginal fuel. On the basis of present cost of power, bark cost and mill production during phase 3, L% cost saving = 155 x (10)6 ESC/year L% fuel saving = 5594 TOE/yearL%
The raw material (eucalyptus Wood) is chipped and then pulped in a continous digester using an alkaline pulping reagent (White liquor).The pulp is washed, screened, bleached and dried to form a sheet.
These processes require hot water and steam.
The solution of spent pulping liquor and lignin breakdown products (known as black liquor) washed out of the pulp must be evaporated to an approx. 60% concentration to enable it to be burnt in a recovery boiler to produce steam. The remainder must be made using others fuels: mill barks, wood wastes and fuel oil.
The project consists of installing new equipment to reduce steam consumption as indicated by a brocess integration "Pinch Technology" targeting exercise, comprising:
- multieffect flash black liquor pre-evaporator (DEV), de signed for integration with the heat recovery systems;
- heat recovery network for optimal recovery of waste heat from the pre-evaporator and other process units. This includes heat exhangers, pipework, pumpingsystems, tanks and process control instrumentation.
The process integration has been studied under "Pinch Technology" developed by prof. B.Linnhoff. The definition of targets for the minimum utility heating and cooling, limited capital availability, avoidance of extreme increase in energy consumption, minimum interference with operating conditions of the plant and restrictions in complexity have arisen in the comparison of four basic options working under six operating conditions. The DEV evaporator gives better energy performances under varied conditions. To establish the economics of installing the DEV, three possibilities have been examined and the DEV with mill heat recovery network have been retained.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
