ENERGY SAVING IN COMMERCIAL BUILDING SPACE HEATING AND COOLING BY APPLICATION OF SOLAR HEAT

Objective

To demonstrate the application of solar heat in space heating and cooling of the Offices of the Technical Direction of the American College of Greece (ACG), through the use of solar heat and of a vapor thermal compression (VTC) chiller.
The expected savings are 4 860 kWhE and 1,2 TOE over the demonstration period (July 1988 - July 1990) as compared to a combined "boiler reciprocating chiller system".

The project consists mainly of an existing array of solar collectors, a new VTC-chiller combined with a cooling tower and an all-air cooling-heating system for the treatment of the rooms.
In the existing solar collectors the solar heat is catched at 90-95 deg.C. The VTC-chiller uses R114 as the motive refrigerant. During the cooling season, the catched solar heat is used to generate the thermal compression of the VTC-chiller, and the transfer of the cooling to the all air system is obtained through direct expansion. During the heating season, the solar heat is adequately by-passed to the all-air system and used to meet the heat demand directly.
The project includes 5 phases :
1 : design of plant parts;
2 : detailed planning and design of installation;
3 : installation;
4 : start-up;
5 : monitoring.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.
