MULTIFUEL FLUIDIZED BED BOILER EXPLOITING INDIGENOUS SOLID FUELS WITH STEAM/DIESEL TURBINE

Objetivo

To demonstrate a large commercial fast circulating type Multisolid Fluidised Bed of Battelle/Foster Wheeler design, capable of providing 80,000 lbs/h of 200 psi steam, feeding into the existing steam supply network and eliminating the need for oil firing.
This contract relates to the evaluation year of the project which began on schedule (1.7.84) after eight weeks of commissioning, and ended (30.6.85).
During the evaluation year (5,280 operating hours), the project failed to realise the full level of contracted fuel savings, attributed to low plant availability and particularly to novel equipment designs, many of which are an integral part of the plant, and proved unsuitable eg. the primary air distributor, the PA distributor expansion device, the EHE distributor expansion arrangement, the EHE tube hanger design and valve suspender design. Process problems (which represent the inherent technical risk in the demonstration) emerged as another factor, of which temperature control problems were by far the most important. Temperature of the dense bed was finally resolved by the successful modification of the L valves and upper cold sand recycle.
Temperature inhomogeneity in the oxidisation zone was greatly improved by development of thenew upper sand recycle. However the problem of excessive temperatures with some fuels in the upper oxidizing zone, the limitation this places on the full flexibility of fuel choice or blend and the danger this introduces of sand sintering, still persist and a new development programme is now required to address these.
A new phenomenon encountered was sand sintering. It was discovered that one aspect of plant design - the cyclone dip leg configuration-promotes difficulties when sand sinters: the demonstration has therefore yielded useful design information in this respect, and led to a new dip leg arrangement to be used in the demonstration plant. Modifications were also incorporated in the new ICI MSFB in Scotland.
Despite these problems, the likelyhood of major unplanned stops in the future is relatively low and the plant is capable of operating at 100% MCR and of following factory load/displacing 100% of oil usage at factory loads below 100% MCR, and it is considered that % oildisplacement in the future will be much higher.
However, due to inability (to date) to fully localise combustion and temperature control, combustion efficiencies at 100% are lower than they could be by +/- 2% and a new development programme will be required to solve the problem.
The project did realise the expected advantages of being able to exploit difficult low grade fuels, and the results in major cost advantages relative to conventional solid-fired plant (depending on availability of waste or opportunity fuels).
Mechanical reliability progressively improved and availabilities in comparison with conventional plant are now expected. The high down-turn target of + 10% was easily achieved. The load following response, following much developmental work on controls etc. improved on the 18%/m. target. Even with reduced combustion efficiencies, overall thermal efficiency can be brought within the 89% design specification.
NOX, SO2 and noise emissions are within design specifications.
The originality of this project is two-fold: one being that it is the first demonstration of a commercial Multi Solid Fluidized Bed, the other in its applications:
- to be able to burn a variety of low grade fuels of widely differing types to achieve financial savings in comparison with conventional solid-fired plant using relatively high grade fuel, and to burn these in different blends in contrast to a conventional plant which generally burns only one fuel type; - to achieve very high turn-down - higher than achievable on any similar solid-fired plant (+ 10%); - to achieve load response better than in any other solid fired plant (+ 18%/m).
The project also includes many innovative features, for example:
- dense bed operation (a fixed bubbling bed, superimposed on a fast circulating bed);
- a complete separation of combustion and heat transfer;
- full automation of a Multi Solid Fluidized Bed:
- testing of feed and combustion equipment to handle high moisture fuels;
- burning ofsod peat with coal;
- burning of high fines coal.
