Objective
The Catala Paper Company plans to replace fuel operated hot air blowers used for heating the plant, by a heat pump with a 2.8 MW capacity. The actual 1000 m3/yr fuel oil consumption will be reduced to the 300 MWH/yr required by the heat pump system which corresponds to savings in the order of 800 TOE/yr.
On an energy basis, fuel consumption for the year 1985 was 316 m3, to be compared with an average of 1000 m3/year before the project.
The gross saving is 684 m3 or 588 TOE per year. On the other hand electricity needed by heat pump and other auxiliary items amounted to 516 MWh or 115 TOE. The net saving is 473 TOE/year, which is about 57% of the expected energy saving.
On a financial basis the payback time results 4.9 years against 2.3 years calculated in 1984 owing to the variation of saving and fuel cost.
The Papeteries Catala intend to replace the fuel operated hot air generators by a 2.8 MW heat pump. The heat recovery is achieved through static absorbers on the boiler and on the corrugating machines and from the river water.. The distribution of heat in the workshops will be effected by pulsed air and controlled mechanical ventilation.
During long period of inactivity, the heat needed to prevent freezing will be pumped from the river water only. An inversion mechanism will enable to transform the evaporators on the corrugating machines into condensers. A monitoring system will control the sequences between heating and freezing prevention and will select the heat sources as needed.
The heat balance and the performances of the heat pump will be calculated by 4 measures of flow together with measures of temperature at the inlet and outlet of the condensers and 3 measures of the electric consumption by means of independent meters.
